Strategic Orthopaedic Solutions (SOS) is an ambitious, innovative new Business Unit based in Raleigh, North Carolina that will focus on the orthopaedic healthcare niche. This venture was developed by two talented individuals. Kurt J. Ehlert, MD is a highly successful orthopaedic surgeon with experience in Practice Management. Bob Pontz has over forty years of executive leadership positions and founded an organizational development and consulting firm. Both have extensive resources and for years have focused on enhancements of the healthcare community. Therefore, SOS recognizes there is often a gap between the business of medicine and the practice of medicine. Often times smaller practices cannot afford or do not have the experience to design and implement an effective organization. SOS offers a unique set of training and services for health care providers; a reliable, high-quality alternative to in-house resources for business development, market development, training, and quality assurance.
SOS plans to target orthopaedic health care service providers, tailoring our services to their needs. Most often we start with a Practice Vitality Check-Up. The checkup will take place at the client's site or via phone and will pinpoint the 'health' of the practice in four major areas; Patients, Personnel, Financial and Infrastructure. Typically this is a one day event if on site, or several calls and source information sent electronically. Following the check-up, a high level assessment is offered with specific recommendations. Next a tailored set of training materials is prepared for the practice providers and key staff members. Participants will receive the skills and tools to design and implement a new practice or review and refine an existing one. Our relationship, however, does not end here. In healthcare, everyone eventually learns to expect the unexpected. Therefore, the SOS program offers online coaching and help-desk support. In addition, participants have the ability to acquire for a modest price customized templates, programs, brochures, and collateral as they deem necessary.
Industry competition comes in several forms, the most significant being companies and individuals who offer traditional consulting. These folks most often only specialize in one area such as billing/collections, startup, contracts, space or computers. There are few that integrate ALL aspects of a medical practice. There are even fewer that have a successful doctor on staff who has 'been there, done that'. Finally, where this program separates itself is with the ongoing support offered to each client. This is much different than just the traditional handshake and well wishes offered from most consultancies.
There are tons of web sites, books galore, educational conferences, advice blogs and such about what you could do become healthy and stay healthy. This is good, but frequently insufficient. How do you pull all that knowledge and information together? In what combination? In what sequence? World class athletes invest in coaches and trainers. It is not a one shot deal but rather a series of programs to prevent injury so they can deliver their best performance. Effective organizations need to stay healthy, too!
Many practices chose to do business development and training in-house rather than outsourcing. This may have been a viable or cost effective approach at startup, but as the practice matures old approaches are often insufficient. There are also many vendor related organizations providing training and development resources. Many of these companies are generalist in nature and do not focus on a niche market. Furthermore, they are often hampered by a flawed organizational structure that does not provide the most experienced people for the client's projects. SOS's advantage over such companies is that it provides high-level consulting to help integrate practice with theory and implementation in concert with the client practice's goals.
SOS will be value priced at highly competitive rates. A traditional 'day rate' will be used for time at the clients' site or at our Leading Edge Development Education Center, in Raleigh, NC. Travel, lodging and meals are at the client expense. The first year's telephone help line and coaching services is a modest $99 per month. Customized templates, brochures, programs, etc. will be priced based upon the client specification and complexities. The pricing will fit with the general positioning of SOS as providing professional-level expertise.
